Clara Cornelia Beukelman was born in Indonesia (former Nederlands-Indië) in 1924.
During the Second World War, her father was captured by the Japanese and died in prison April 1945.
Clara was then 20 years old.
Most of Indonesia was still under Japanese occupation at the time of Japan's capitulation in August 1945.

Queen Beatrix's state visit to Japan, scheduled for 1987, was canceled due to existing feelings and public controversy.

The Japanese emperor Hirohito visited the Netherlands in October 1971.
There were also many protests at that time.
Wim Kan, a very well-known Dutch comedian, was one of the people who made his voice heard.
Wim Kan was taken prisoner in Indonesia on March 13, 1942 and survived the war.
During the war, he worked on the well-known Burma Railway.
